Self-supporting vibration test chamber saves space in the test centre

Weiss Technik develops compact solution without front support

Space in test centres can be costly. The more compact test systems can be designed, the better. For a customer, Weiss Technik has realised a self-supporting vibration test chamber without front support for tests in the automotive sector. Thanks to the special design, this offers more space in the test centre and thus more spatial flexibility for the customer.

Compact vibration test chamber for tests

Various suppliers to car manufacturers were looking for a compact testing solution for different vehicle components and accessories. These were to be tested in a temperature range from −65 to +150°C. Because the vibration test system or “shaker” requires a lot of space, a solution that was considerably more compact without reducing the size of the test chamber had to be found. For this purpose, Weiss Technik developed a unique vibration test system in a self-supporting compact design. Thanks to the extension of the frame and the relocation of machines and control cabinets, the vibration test chamber is stable and secure with no risk of tipping over.

Compact intermediate size for automotive tests

Weiss Technik is an experienced partner for testing technology in the automotive sector. In addition to numerous standard solutions for various test specimens, test scenarios, and test standards, Weiss Technik stands for its customised and versatile special construction solutions for special requirements. The system has a total height of 4,150 mm, a width of 2,685 mm, and a travel distance of 6.5 metres. The test chamber has a volume of 6,000 l and allows larger test specimens to be tested in less space than a larger system.

ShakeEvent stands for proven testing technology

The ShakeEvent concept is based on a tried-and-tested system concept and Weiss Technik's many years of experience as a specialised partner to the automotive industry. The test systems are equipped with an S!MPAC control system and the WebSeason interface. This enables simple programming of test sequences, has a multi-user function and allows worldwide access via tablet or PC. The air routing ensures a high temperature consistency in the test room. The system was supplied with the refrigerants R449A and R469A and a maximum GWP value of just 1,397. This means it is future-proof and can be operated without any problems even after 2030.

Key technical data of the test chamber

The test chamber measures 2,685 × 4,150 × 4,775 mm (W × H × D). The test space is made of stainless steel and welded vapour-tight. It has a test volume of 6.355 m3 and measures (W × H × D) 2,000 × 1,650 × 2,050 mm. Access ports for cables into the test space are provided. The test system is designed for tests in the temperature range from −65 to +150°C and ensures a temperature change rate of 5, 10, and 15 K/min in accordance with IEC 60068-3-5. It achieves a deviation of ± 0.3 to ± 0.8 K in time and ± 0.5 to ± 2.0 K in space. A Pt 100 platinum temperature sensor is integrated in the test space.

Possible integrated safety equipment

The vibration test chamber is equipped with various safety features. This includes the pressure relief membrane (optional) integrated into the ceiling. This limits pressure fluctuations and their effects that occur during the tests. In addition, the vibration test chamber can be equipped with ATEX Zone 2 or Hazard Level safety equipment. This includes a status display (including a visual and acoustic warning device), a door tumbler and an external door lock, permanent nitrogen inertisation, a pressure relief flap, and other safety features.

Fast commissioning possible

The vibration test chamber was designed so that it can be transported almost ready for use. This simplified and accelerated installation and commissioning on site. After connecting to the on-site infrastructure and carrying out a functional test, the safety equipment was checked. Test cycles were then carried out in the areas of temperature and climate, and the employees were familiarised with the device. They were impressed by the performance of the vibration test chamber and surprised by the minimal space requirements.
