The challenge

The Liesborn Gospels, one of the oldest and completely preserved Gospel manuscripts in Westphalia, posed a unique challenge for preservation. In order to ensure the long-term preservation of the gospels, precise climate control within the display case and the associated vault was essential.

The main requirements for the air conditioning system included maintaining a constant temperature of 18°C and a relative humidity of 50% with maximum deviations of 2.5%. These strict conditions were necessary in order to prevent chemical degradation of the paper, drying out and brittleness of the paper and leather, and the formation of mould and fungi. The need to prevent moisture fluctuations, which can damage the material structure, was particularly critical.

The idea

Weiss Klimatechnik opted for the Vindur Compact full air conditioning unit in order to fulfil these demanding requirements. By using this device together with an intelligent control system, it was possible to achieve permanent and constant climate control in the display case and vault. This solution created a true “climate safe” for the priceless exhibit.

The Liesborn Gospels are now displayed in a specially air-conditioned display case, which automatically transports the book to an air-conditioned vault after opening hours. This innovative system ensures that the book is not exposed to climatic fluctuations at any time and thus offers permanent protection for the historical document.

The solution

Commissioning and long-term monitoring by Weiss Klimatechnik confirmed the success of the installed climate control solution. Precise adherence to the required temperature and humidity values ensures the long-term preservation of the Liesborn Gospels by protecting them from the potentially damaging effects of uncontrolled environmental conditions.

This climate control solution not only demonstrates the technical expertise of Weiss Klimatechnik in the climate control of highly sensitive artefacts but also underlines the importance of careful climate control in the preservation of valuable historical documents. By combining advanced technology and customised engineering, Weiss Klimatechnik offers an unrivalled solution that safeguards the future of historical treasures.
